Excellent reviews for Reija Lang New Trio´s album Blood of Joy

Mikko-Ville, Jarno and me are truly happy about the positive feedback and reviews we have recieved for our album Blood of Joy. Here come some latest reviews .. see what thay say about our music  ;)

Three individualists collaborate and give birth to a rich acoustic sound with great intensity. Lang´s expression is free of limits -yet still in sovereign control. The trio´s collaboration is colourful and energetic, playful. The rare combination of instruments proofs to be an excellent match.

- Hannu Lahtonen, Kauppalehti 8.1.2014 -

The idea of a combination of a vocalist, bassist/violinist and a guitarist as a jazz combo might sound a bit breathless – but that´s not true with this trio. The charm of the album is based on the light and elegant sound together with genious arrangements. It seems that Lang reaches the freedom of singing best in this relaxed trio atmosphere.

- Harri Uusitorppa, Helsingin Sanomat, 15.1.2014  -

The album Blood of Joy communicates extremely well its name – being an intense and positive work or art. The colourful music radiates  the fresh joy of playing and singing.

- Ilari Tapio, Satakunnan Kansa 7.1.2014 -

Reija Lang´s 5th album Blood of Joy is not meant for background jazz. The album must be listened with focus and concentration. When you do that, you´ll be awarded with an unexpected discovery trip into contemporary jazz. This album is a true piece of jazz art presented by improvisation geniouses. The sound is wide, with variety and deep colors – with all those different jazz genre influences.

- Jael Nyman, Hufvudstadsbladet 5.2.2014 -

Reija is a talented vocalist who has the gift of maximising her range and intensity – topped with the capability of using her voice as an instrumental sound. Jarno Kukkonen on guitar and Mikko-Ville Luolajan-Mikkola on double bass and violin play extremely well together and both excel on solos as well. Big applause for the band.

- Matti Laipio, Jazzrytmit 3.12.2013 -

Splendid Reviews for Reija Lang & Arricone Big Band Album

Happy news! Our big band album has been very well received amongst the Finnish jazz media. Here are some of the reviews regarding Reija Lang & Arricone Big Band with special guest Riku Niemi album, released on September 22, 2013.

Vocalist Reija Lang has a gorgeous sound combined with wide range interpretation. She is no doubt the best Finnish big band featuring vocalist at the moment.  Arricone Big Band plays together with excellence.

- Reijo Vaurula, Kymen Sanomat 11/2013 -

It´s not very common these days to see big band recordings published together with a featuring vocalist. It´s even more rare that the end result is this excellent. This album is a born classic and highly recommended for this genre lovers.

- Jazzpossu JazzBlog 12/2013 -

Reija Lang is a fabulous young female vocalist whose sound and phrasing are like made for big band. She excels in sensitivity as well as highly swinging groove as well as scat. Erno Tiittanen´s arrangements are highlighted also with excellent instrumental solos – e.g. special guest Riku Niemi flies high on vibraphone.

- Jussi Asu, Ilkka 23.10.2013 -

Reija Lang is one of the leading jazz vocalists in Finland – and it is proven again on this new album with Arricone Big Band. Her energetic and luminously intense alto sound is capturing. ABB is a top notch big band with 17 musicians – and they create together gorgeous sound – lifting up both the arrangements as well as the soloists. Erno Tiittanen´s arrangements groove high in a hardbop style.

- Seppo Lumikko, KL Optio 24.10.2013 -

Reija Lang is one of the top notch jazz vocalists and lyricists in Finland. She moves around with ease digging into treasures of 60´s hardbop – from brightly flying “Little Unhappy Boy” to sensitive interpretation of “The Masquarade is Over”. Solid interpretations match perfectly arranger Erno Tiittanen´s visionary and idea rich arrangements. Special guest Riku Niemi gives a tasty boost for the band with his spectacular vibraphone.

- Hannu Lahtonen, Kauppalehti 18.9.2013 -

Music & Lyrics

Bio

I´m a storyteller and a modernist by inner spirit. I prefer to improvise, explore new ways of using human voice and sounds, and create a touching performance. Writing poems, lyrics and stories give me the opportunity to communicate deeper with the audience and touch their souls. Curiosity, ideas, passion, persistence and sincerity form the basis in my thinking.

Some people say that my alto voice is very expressive, moving from childlike innocence to matured beauty and up to surreal drama - and I think that describes me pretty well. I prefer using the whole scale of human voice when telling the story and capturing its emotions. I also enjoy to improvise - my intuitive feel for rhythm takes me around the music and I am happiest if I can surprise myself with what I´ll find.

It´s very hard for me to define my genre – and I do not want to do it at all. I prefer to explore different music and art features and styles. I have strong roots in swing/mainstream/bebop and therefore I can move with ease around different genres. Either singing jazz standards and arranged big band music with style - or experimenting the contemporary music and absolutely free improvisation with no limits.

During the years of exploring different angles and flavours of jazz I have been an active listener. I am open minded and curious to find interesting sounds, tunes, voices, rhythm patterns, wild attitude, openminded and soulful musicians - anything that catches my attention with unique touch of creativity.
